This is an art piece by Edgar Degas called, "After Bath". Now although many people may look at this piece because it has a naked woman in it, it is much more then that, although that is the first thing that caught my eye. I believe that Degas was trying to capture the beauty of such simple tasks that women take part in each and every day. In this intent Degas is very successful and captures that beauty within this woman, he allows the audience to see drying off in a whole new light. This picture successfully draws the audience's attention right away because it is so unique, and when I and many others pay more attention to the piece of art the inner beauty is revealed. I believe this was the intent of Degas to get a unique response from his audience, and to make sure they direct their attention to the piece. Overall Degas creates this art which grabs attention and strikes the audience, especially woman who can relate to the picture itself.

This is an art piece done by Monet of a bridge by a lily pond. I believe that Monet intended to create a place of serenity, and to show that bridges can be very peaceful. There is excellent quality in this picture, for the bridge does not look out of place like it might if the scenario were different. Monet successfully creates this place of peace and creates the painting so that the whole piece comes together and does not look unmatched. This piece is special to me because it almost capture that peaceful place i escape to in my head when i need to get away. The lilies also create a perfect scenery for me because lilies are my favorite flower and was my grandpas before he passed on, making them near and dear to my heart.

ART?????

What is art? What isn't art? Personally I think that art is a form of expression, at can recreate and idea, create a new idea or create a representation. Art comes in many different forms; from songs to pictures, to maybe even a short story. I have come to believe that art is almost a category that something fits into when you don't know the category that something fits into. For example, if your are unsure of what category something may fit into, like they know that it's not science, and not history, it could be art.

The other day I was talking about a poem i wrote not too long ago and was asked, well is that poem art? I immediately snapped back claiming that of course it's art, but then got to thinking of what makes my poem art, why was I so sure? I decided it was art because I find most poetry to be art, i was intending for my poem to be art and to express my opinions, and was hoping to get a related feeling from other woman as a response to my poem.

In our class, this is what we discussed on how art has intention, some sort of quality and a response, for these reasons I came to the conclusion that my poem was in fact a piece of art, and using these factors as a guide line we are able to somewhat distinguish between what is art and what is not. The quality and success in achieving the intent can differ between good and bad art, although sometimes yes it may be subjective. So, if you are creating a master piece try to remember that the art really is judged subjectively; but if you achieve what you set out to do, you created a work of art.

What's Good?

The term good is used quite frequently in our everyday conversation, for example; so how did your day go today.... oh good good and you... oh pretty good. Lame, and besides the fact how can you define what is good or not. When it comes to food, there is a new article on the news everyday that tells us something new is going to make us live longer or help us cure cancer, and the next day it's going to cause early death in certain age groups. So what do you believe? Nothing its all hoo haw, I say the best thing to do is enjoy what you eat and hope that it is the good thing for you to eat and you can live a long and prosperous life. Now back to what is good, it is very difficult to understand what is good and what is bad which even leads to what is right and what is wrong. Mainly we are taught by our parents and they install a set of morals in us, yes just like a computer, and we learn to decifer the difference. The line can be very thin though, and sometimes there is no good or bad decision. The only good or right thing to do, well most times, is to do what you think is the right or good thing to do and hope that your decision works well.

Ethical Theories

In the Dilemma in my previous blog I decided it would be the right thing to do to keep the cheating quiet and to just deal with your own problems, this situation can be debated extensively on what is right and what is wrong; or what one should do compared to what they would do. I do believe that in this case I made the right decision, for yes you may help the teacher if you inform them there is some cheating taking place in the class, but is not another students obligation to take care of other students but to worry about themselves and their futures. Three main theories or approaches to ethics have been derived including consequentaialism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Consequetaialism refers to morally ethic decisions that focus on the outcome or consequence of the decision made. This does somewaht apply for this dilems for one must consider whether to make the decision that has the best outcome for themselves; maybe telling the teacher and sucking up to that teacher to get a better mark; or looking at the other outcomes with not telling the teacher. Deontology refers to the rightness or wrongness of the actual act in the dilema. I don't believe deontology is used as much in this particular dilema, for the decision does not present terrible consequences for you if either decision is made. Virtue ethics focuses on the character of the decision and the individual making the decision. I believe virtue ethics should be the most heavily weighted theory in this decision, for the decision made will definately depend on the type of person making the decision and this character of this decision where it does not effect many people to an extreme extent weighs heavily on why and what the individual will decide. In this dilemma looking at the best scenerio, by looking out for yourself and your best interest is the way to guide your decision.

Dilema

If you were taking a class where you struggled just to pass the class, and there was another student, who we will call Sue, is excelling because Sue's older cousin is doing the work for her. Here is were the dilemma comes into play, as your frustration grows you become more and more tempted to turn Sue in and expose her for the cheater she is. Do you drop the teacher an anonymous note about the implied cheating on the part of this other student? Or do you ignore the cheating and only seek help? Turning Sue in might get the teacher to slow down a little, and help you in the long run. What do you do?

***In regards to this dilemma I believe that, ethically, you can try and hint that there may be a student cheating and some sort of pop quiz or such may help in the catching of this student, but karma will eventually come around and get Sue. For although it is unethical to cheat, I believe that Sue would get what is coming to her, for she would know nothing in the long run and would not do well in greater education. It is more important for each individual to look out for themselves and not worry what the students around you are doing. Yes, if you were to help the teacher discover the cheating, the teacher may be likely to help you, but I'm sure the teacher would help no matter what. There are also students who naturally excel that can help you with your homework and in your classes. So, I therefore believe that what is your business is your business and trying to get involved with other peoples business will only cause more drama and possibly present more dilemmas. It is better to take of ones own business and try to get the help needed, and try to do better before worrying about other peoples grades, and as i said before Sue will find the consequences of her cheating harder then the class she is cheating in and will get the punishment she deserves. Concluding that one should not rat out Sue for cheating but worry about their own problems.

Knowledge at face value.

When asked to do a research project in our current generation we open books, but more often then not, go on the Internet. Yet, how can you trust that information that is sitting there in front of your face? OK sure I have been told to do research on the author on the site to make sure they have some credibility, OK now so say i was to make a site and it looked absolutely professional. Theoretically I could give myself a PHD behind my name and how would you know the difference. Yes, your going to say you can ask the schools and what not, but most of us, well we just take it at face value.

Face Value, what does that mean, well it's the good nature that is in people that wants them to believe that no one would lie on the Internet or to alarm you. Well, that assumption is wrong, there are numerous sites on the Internet that contradict themselves numerous times, so somebody has to be lying, but who.

While taking part in some research, I recently stumbled upon a site in which explained that the world would come to an abrupt halt on October tenth. Now although this is just mere days away, I am unsure whether to believe any of the information I find on this particular subject. For another site said the world would end on September tenth, was this just a mix up in dates or is it just a tangled web of rumors? It is extremely difficult to tell when someone is telling the truth, twisting facts, or just plane lying, so maybe it is better to take things at face value, at least then you have an excuse if your information is wrong.

The Internet reminds me of high school, one rumor after another is created in order for people to feel better about themselves or to put others in the school down. The Internet works in similar ways, it is just another form of communication, it allows people to create lies that look real in order to expose people as frauds or to destroy them, and yet people take this information at face value because it looks important and legitimate on the Internet.

Although freedom of speech is useful in most situations, it comes into subject when talking about truth, for with freedom of speech allows people to speek as they wish, and do not have to tell the truth when doing so.

So what do you do, what do you believe? Here it is my opinoin; have an open mind believe what seems believable, but always keep in mind that you know nothing unless you can have some sort of proof, don't go and now doubt the whole world but don't believ and take all knowledge at face value. Just be careful out there people not everyone is as honest as you and me.
